Orbital Marketing is a term I just made up. I had a vision of how all the niche things Alice and I do that can be standalone things that we can market separately that all point back to our main businesses. People often get interested in one of those things, and wind up becoming a client or customer of our real business.
Get enough of these going, with multiple connections and the orbit becomes a bit web-like. That's because we can often tie it to several things that we are doing and even promote our partners too.
To give you a visual, I attempted to diagram this out. Not only side projects are in your orbit, but sometimes other businesses are too. You can team up on these projects and have it point to multiple businesses as well as other assets you've built. Mine happens to be heavily written material centric, but yours doesn't have to be.

The fun part is, you get to follow your side interests into other areas. You just need to be able to tie it back to your main thing. You also need to discern whether you are chasing shiny objects instead of doing the work you need to in your business, or if you're building a viable asset that will get you an audience you wouldn't otherwise have.
If you partner with other businesses, you get to leverage another person's skills, talents, knowledge and even resources and vice versa. That ultimately puts out a better product for the people, you both do less work and everybody wins.
My Shemitah book was pretty "out there" in terms of relation to what I normally write. It connects well to Healing in the Hebrew Months, and that book is a funnel into Freedom Flowers, but otherwise it has nothing in common. I worked on it a little bit after writing to get Freedom Flowers mentioned and linked, and then Supernatural Business was an easy fit where I was talking about the Shemitah's effect on business, so I pitched the free challenge. Simple additions. Time will tell how effective those will be, my experience says not very, but it was an easy add.
In general, the more that you're in a building phase with your business, the tighter your focus needs to be. Build really solid orbit assets and when you are making sufficient money, you can write your Shemitah book and not care that it's a dumb business decision.
As promised, The 3 People You Can't Partner With in Business.
Homework:
1. Identify the assets you already have. Is there something that you could easily send out to orbit? It needs to be something marketable on it's own. For example, I have a bigger budget to advertise my books than I do my flower essences. The books do a better job of advertising the essences than ads can. And it's easier to advertise a book since people are familiar with those.
2. What have you already got floating around out there? Can you make a few adjustments and pull it into orbit? (This is done by tying it to other things you're doing, like how I got my Shemitah book at least semi-connected.)
3. Is there something that you've had in mind to do that would make a good orbit asset? Does it connect to what you do? Is it marketable? Figure out where it ranks on your list of priorities and maybe give it some 20% time.
